The Week’s Biggest Winner & Loser

Virgin Galactic (SPCE)

It’s amazing how a tiny news story like aerospace giant Boeing (BA) working with a piddly startup like Virgin Galactic (SPCE) can cause the stock to pop +16.56% and become the Week’s Biggest Winner, isn’t it? /sarcasm

Golden Minerals (AUMN)

With the economy remaining strong, bond yields rising, and the Federal Reserve going full-steam ahead on rising the benchmark interest rate, gold got slammed hard this week. Gold miners like Golden Minerals (AUMN) got hit particularly hard, with AUMN losing -4.08% to become the Week’s Biggest Loser.

This Week’s Moves

Speculation is as Speculation Does…

Speculative investing is certainly challenging. Determining when to buy (or add) to a position can be entirely a matter of timing. Sometimes, buying a highly-speculative investment during a market-wide selloff is the right move, while other times an investor may be better-served waiting for a stock- or sector-specific bad news event.

Regardless, I find that speculative investing requires a lot more patience than “normal” investing (if any investing can be truly called “normal”). Whereas there’s almost never a bad time to buy a blue chip stock like Apple (AAPL), most of the positions in my Speculation in Play portfolio require a much finer touch.

As a result, here I am – for the third week in a row – having made absolutely no moves – neither buying nor selling – in my speculative portfolio.
