The Week’s Biggest Winner & Loser

DraftKings (DKNG)

Despite a week that took out the majority of the market, online sports gambling play DraftKings (DKNG) somehow earned a +2.99% gain. While that’s not much to write home about, it’s definitely enough to earn DKNG the spot of the Week’s Biggest Winner during a week where the S&P 500 sold off a whopping -5.06%!

Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL)

When inflation reigns supreme, any company with debt on its balance sheet gets hit hard, and there are few companies out there with a worse debt ratio than Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL). CCL lost -18.21% this week and easily cruised into the spot of the Week’s Biggest Loser.

This Week’s Moves

You know it’s a weird week when…

… the markets sell off spectacularly, yet I still didn’t make a single move in my Speculation in Play portfolio. That’s just how it goes, sometimes. The market rotated out of a number of other stocks, but more or less left the highly speculative positions alone.

Now, that’s not to say the speculative sector is doing well… not by a long shot. In fact, the Speculation in Play portfolio only maintains a +1.12% lifetime gain. Yes, that’s right – since its inception in 2018, the portfolio is only up +1.120%. However, given how speculative the positions in the portfolio are, I’m happy to be above break-even, thank you very much.

As for no moves this week, it’s all good. I have a sneaky suspicion that the volatility we saw this week is only the beginning as the Fed meeting next week combines with low summer trading volume. Hang on to your hats!
