The Week’s Biggest Winner & Loser

Advanced Micro (AMD)

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) once again blew the roof off the joint with an exceptional earnings report, proving that CEO Dr. Lisa Su is an absolute rockstar in the tech space. AMD locked in a +17.45% gain, easily earning itself the space of the Week’s Biggest Winner.

Danimer Sci (DNMR)

In a week where quite literally every other position finished in the green, Danimer Scientific (DNMR) pulled out all the stops to lay one hell of an egg… a massive -11.52% drop to give itself a Year-To-Date result of an eye-watering -52.23%. At this point, it’s hard to know just how low this piece of absolute garbage may go…

This Week’s Moves

Contemplation over Speculation…

After a few weeks of intense buying, having the markets bounce this week offered me a reprieve to review my speculative positions to determine if there was anything interesting to purchase.

While I did consider snapping up Snap (SNAP) before its earnings report – a move that would have netted me a +50% gain in one day, I opted not to. With 20/20 hindsight, naturally this was a poor decision, however none of us have the ability to see the future.

On Wednesday night, Meta (FB) (previously Facebook) reported an absolutely terrible quarter which destroyed tech on Thursday. While that left the other social media stocks like Twitter (TWTR), Pinterest (PINS), and, indeed, Snap (SNAP) extremely beaten up throughout the day, there was no way to know whether the negative guidance provided by FB would only affect them or if it was indicative of the entire social media landscape.

Additionally, since PINS is the second-largest single-company position in the Speculation in Play and I still hold shares in Twitter recognized in the Cash portion of the portfolio, buying more social media exposure didn’t just seem imprudent, it would have violated my rules of diversification, too.

While the point of this portfolio remains higher-risk, speculative positions, I must constantly remind myself that I still must stick to my discipline. Maintaining discipline and taking a responsible and thoughtful approach to investing may be even more important for my Speculation in Play portfolio than it is for my Investments in Play or Pandemic Portfolios.

At any rate, just because we miss one opportunity doesn’t mean another isn’t right around the corner.

Have a great week, everyone!
