The Week’s Biggest Winner & Loser

Canopy Growth Corp (CGC)

Cannabis remains the most volatile sector in the stock market, trading up and down on every rumor or news report. The DEA has de-scheduled cannabis down to Schedule 3 with all that remains is approval from other divisions in the government. As a result, cannabis stocks once again exploded to the upside with Canopy Growth Corporation (CGC) gaining nearly +80% in a single day. It calmed down by the weekend, closing the week up +14.93% which was enough to earn it the spot of the Week’s Biggest Winner.

SoFi Technologies (SOFI)

In this market, it’s not enough to report good earnings, you also have to give great guidance. SoFi Technologies (SOFI) nailed the former but screwed up the latter, claiming the consumer would be hard to pin down going forward. As a result, SoFi, everyone’s darling fintech company, dropped -11.56% to deposit in as the Week’s Biggest Loser.

This Week’s Moves

JPMorgan Chase (JPM): Dividend Reinvestment

JPMorgan (JPM) paid out its quarterly dividend on April 30 which, after reinvesting, increased my per-share “cost” +0.59% from -$81.50 to -$81.02 (a negative per-share cost indicates all capital has been removed in addition to $81.02 per share added to the portfolio’s bottom line in addition to each share’s current value).

Why did my cost basis raise after receiving a dividend?

Whenever all capital has been removed from a position, a dividend reinvestment adds more shares to the position, not more profits. So, the profit in the position is divided by more shares and raises the per-share cost even though the value of the entire position is also increased by the new shares from the dividend.

From here, I still have no sell targets for JPMorgan, despite it being slightly overweight in the Financial Basket. Since I have an enormous cash position in the portfolio, I’m in no hurry to reduce any of my dividend-yielders. My next buy target remains at $165.89, slightly above a key level of support JPM saw in the past.

See you next week!
