The Week’s Biggest Winner & Loser

Boeing (BA)

Boeing (BA) is back, baby! With a new supercycle of airplane replacements for the world’s airlines and some suitable profitability in store, it looks like Boeing may finally have returned to greatness… for the moment. BA brought in +11.82% in a great week and beat out the rest of the portfolio, landing in the spot of the Week’s Biggest Winner. Consequently, Boeing is once again the biggest position in the portfolio (it hasn’t been in YEARS), a potential indication that the market has shifted to industrials as the leaders rather than technology.

Rivian (RIVN)

With news that Tesla (TSLA) has had to lower prices due to consumer not wanting Electric Vehicles (EV) as much as everyone thought plus missing deliveries last quarter, Rivian (RIVN) has been a never-ending world of pain. Anyone hoping for a reprieve when the calendar flipped was smacked with ANOTHER -11.01% loss in Rivian, easily parking in the spot of the Week’s Biggest Loser.

Year-to-Date Performance

The “Baskets”

The Investments in Play portfolio contains a number of groups of stocks called “baskets.” I use baskets when I want exposure to a certain sector, but I want to use more than one stock to get that exposure without giving each individual stock an allocation.

In this portfolio, there is the Financials Basket which includes stocks that provide the portfolio with exposure to the financial sector which includes money-center banks, credit card companies, and investment management firms.

The Pets Basket includes the two leaders in pet health, long-time holding IDEXX Labs (IDXX) and newcomer Zoetis (ZTS). Both are considered “Best-in-Breed” (pun intended) for different reasons which is why I’m holding both of them instead of just picking one or over the other.

Additionally, there are two speculative baskets in the portfolio: Old-Spec and New-Spec.

Companies in the Old-Spec basket are ones with long track records where I want to have some exposure in the portfolio but I’m not confident enough to give each a full allocation.

New-Spec companies are typically stocks either new on the scene or representing a fairly new approach or sector, where, like Old-Spec, I want exposure but I don’t want a full allocation of any individual company.

This Week’s Moves

Boeing (BA): Profit-Taking

The first trading day of 2023 kicked off with Boeing (BA) popping and hitting my next sell target on Tuesday which filled at $196.86. The sale locked in +28.21% in gains selling some of the shares I bought for $153.55 back on April 27, 2022, and lowered my per-share “cost” -10.54% from -$162.30 to -$179.40 (a negative per-share cost indicates all capital has been removed in addition to $179.40 per share added to the portfolio’s bottom line in addition to each share’s current value).

From here, my next sell target is $233.70, just below a past point of resistance and a key Fibonacci Retracement level, and my next buy target is $117.65, a bit above BA’s 2022 low down at $113.02.

BA closed the week at $213.00, up +8.20% from where I took profits Tuesday.

Dow (DOW): Profit-Taking

Chemical-maker, Dow (DOW), saw a pretty significant rally this week despite the selloff in many other sectors, triggering a sell order of mine which filled on Thursday at $52.98. The order sold some more of the dividends I had earned over the years I’ve owned this position, reducing my per-share cost -0.94% from $31.95 to $31.65.

From here, my next sell target is $55.85, just below a past point of resistance, where I will continue reducing my shares until I finally take all of the original capital of this stock I’ve held since 2019. My next buy target is $30.90, above a key point of resistance from when DOW started recovering from its March 2020 lows.

DOW closed the week at $55.02, up +3.85% from where I took profits Thursday.

IDEXX Laboratories (IDXX): Profit-Taking

IDEXX Laboratories (IDXX) rallied significantly into the week’s end with the rest of the market, triggering a sell order of mine on Friday which filled at $446.78. The sale locked in +192.80% in gains selling some shares I purchased for $152.59 back on August 3, 2017, shortly after I initially opened the position, and lowered my per-share cost -$108.70 from -$112.25 to -$220.95 (a negative per-share cost indicates all capital has been removed in addition to $220.95 per share added to the portfolio’s bottom line in addition to each share’s current value).

From here, my next sell target is just under $558.00, a past point of resistance, and my next buy target remains at $322.90, a bit above IDXX’s 2022 lows.

IDXX closed the week at $447.77, up +0.22% from where I took profits Friday.

Logitech (LOGI): Profit-Taking

Logitech (LOGI) popped with the rest of the market on Tuesday, triggering my next sell order which filled at $64.45. The sale locked in +24.18% in gains on shares I bought for $51.90 back on June 13, 2022 and lowered my per-share cost -9.14% from $11.71 to $10.64.

I plan to continue to aggressively reduce my Logitech position as it is one of the longest-running positions that still retains capital in it and has far too much profitability, a combination that goes against my discipline to “not turn winners into losers.” Accordingly, my next sell target is $72.40, below a past point of resistance.

From here, my next buy target is $43.85, above LOGI’s 2022 lows as well as above another key level of support.

LOGI closed the week at $66.00, up +2.40% from where I took profits Wednesday.
