The Week’s Biggest Winner & Loser
Nvidia (NVDA)
I’m still trying to figure out why, but, somehow, the semiconductor space actually rallied this week despite the rest of the market getting slammed. As a result, Nvidia (NVDA) walks away with the Week’s Biggest Winner title after managing to squeak out a +0.73% gain in a portfolio of red.
Canopy Growth Corp (CGC)
You might have heard in the past few weeks that Congress could approve the SAFE Banking Act which would allow cannabis company like Canopy Growth Corporation (CGC) to operate as legitimate businesses in the U.S.
Then, this week, you might have heard Mitch McConnell shoot down the Democrats’ idea of adding the bill to the defense budget. Well, when your stock rallies on the back of proposed legislation that gets denied (hopefully, delayed), all those gains disappear in a hurry.
As a result, CGC got slammed down -33.10% this week alone, easily earning it the spot of the Week’s Biggest Loser.

The “Baskets”
The Investments in Play portfolio contains a number of groups of stocks called “baskets.” I use baskets when I want exposure to a certain sector, but I want to use more than one stock to get that exposure without giving each individual stock an allocation.
In this portfolio, there is the Financials Basket which includes stocks that provide the portfolio with exposure to the financial sector which includes money-center banks, credit card companies, and investment management firms.
The Pets Basket includes the two leaders in pet health, long-time holding IDEXX Labs (IDXX) and newcomer Zoetis (ZTS). Both are considered “Best-in-Breed” (pun intended) for different reasons which is why I’m holding both of them instead of just picking one or over the other.
Additionally, there are two speculative baskets in the portfolio: Old-Spec and New-Spec.
Companies in the Old-Spec basket are ones with long track records where I want to have some exposure in the portfolio but I’m not confident enough to give each a full allocation.
New-Spec companies are typically stocks either new on the scene or representing a fairly new approach or sector, where, like Old-Spec, I want exposure but I don’t want a full allocation of any individual company.

This Week’s Moves
Rivian (RIVN): Added to Position
Rivian (RIVN) broke down with the rest of the market on Tuesday, triggering my next buy order which filled at $27.90. Despite being a very small buy, the order still lowered my per-share cost -3.79% from $59.40 to $57.15.
From here, my next buy target (another small buy) is at $24.90, a past point of support from earlier in the year, and my next sell target is $66.90, just below the next level of resistance above my new cost basis of $57.15.
RIVN closed the week at $27.29, down -2.19% from where I added Tuesday.
Visa (V): Dividend Reinvestment
Visa (V) paid out its quarterly dividend last Friday which, after reinvestment, lowered my per-share cost -0.21% from $175.00 to $174.63. My next buy target for Visa is $175.10, slightly above its $174.60 low for 2022, and I have no sell targets for the position at this time as I would like to build it further.
Zoetis (ZTS): Dividend Reinvestment
Zoetis (ZTS) paid out its quarterly dividend last Friday, which, while small, lowered my per-share cost -0.18% from $150.40 to $150.13 after being reinvested. From here, my next sell target for the stock is $158.75, and my next buy target is $117.00, above a past point of support.
