The Week’s Biggest Winner & Loser
Roblox (RBLX)
Roblox (RBLX) took off to the races after reporting better-than-expected user growth in September. The stock popped +20.39% on the news demonstrating that, sometimes, even in this market, good news actually is good news, and earning our buddling little metaverse play the spot of the Week’s Biggest Winner.
Nike (NKE)
You know it’s been a heck of a week when the “Biggest Loser” actually gained, just not enough to compete with the rest of the portfolio. This week’s Biggest Loser is Nike (NKE) which “only” gained +1.09% on the week, likely due to the ongoing lockdowns in China preventing sales growth from that country.

The “Baskets”
The Investments in Play portfolio contains a number of groups of stocks called “baskets.” I use baskets when I want exposure to a certain sector, but I want to use more than one stock to get that exposure without giving each individual stock an allocation.
In this portfolio, there is the Financials Basket which includes stocks that provide the portfolio with exposure to the financial sector which includes money-center banks, credit card companies, and investment management firms.
The Pets Basket includes the two leaders in pet health, long-time holding IDEXX Labs (IDXX) and newcomer Zoetis (ZTS). Both are considered “Best-in-Breed” (pun intended) for different reasons which is why I’m holding both of them instead of just picking one or over the other.
Additionally, there are two speculative baskets in the portfolio: Old-Spec and New-Spec.
Companies in the Old-Spec basket are ones with long track records where I want to have some exposure in the portfolio but I’m not confident enough to give each a full allocation.
New-Spec companies are typically stocks either new on the scene or representing a fairly new approach or sector, where, like Old-Spec, I want exposure but I don’t want a full allocation of any individual company.

This Week’s Moves
JPMorgan Chase (JPM): Profit-Taking
After reporting excellent earnings, JPMorgan Chase (JPM) popped up to its 150-Day Moving Average around $120.00 where I decided to take profits on Tuesday with a sale that went through at $118.33, locking in +2.44% in profits on shares I bought for $115.51 earlier this year on May 12. The sale lowered my per-share cost -4.01% from $76.10 down to $73.05.
Some may wonder why I would take such meager profits in a sector that’s starting to outperform, and there are a couple of reasons for this.
1. When I bought in May, I misjudged how low JPM could sell off. It ended up dropping to a 2022 low of $101.28, down -12.32% from where I added at $115.51. Since the stock has now popped +16.83% off those lows and given the macroeconomic concerns facing the market, I wanted to reduce the position.
2. Whereas previously JPMorgan had an entire allocation in the portfolio, it is now part of the Financials Basket along with Morgan Stanley (MS), Schwab (SCHW), and Visa (V). Since JPM was already substantially sized prior to the basket’s creation, JPM ended up being significantly overweight in the basket and had to be reduced in size.
From here, my next sell target is $131.45, below a past point of resistance, and my next buy target is lower than the 2022 lows at $91.65, a point of past support over the years.
JPM closed the week at $122.29, up +3.35% from where I took profits Tuesday.
