The Week’s Biggest Winner & Loser

Rivian (RIVN)

Your guess is as good as mine as to what caused EV upstart Rivian Technologies (RIVN) to pop +8.31% this week. Maybe the entire EV sector just got so hated that it was time for a big bounce? Regardless of the reason, bounce Rivian did, jumping +8.31% and parking in the spot of the Biggest Winner for the week.

Tesla (TSLA)

With the rest of the EV sector popping, you’d probably think Best-of-Breed Tesla (TSLA) would see some love, and, it might have, had CEO Elon Musk not continue to extend the entire Twitter (TWTR) fiasco – claiming that he would still be buying the flailing social media company. Tesla tanked -13.73% this week, earning itself the spot of the Week’s Biggest Loser.

Year-to-Date Performance

The “Baskets”

The Investments in Play portfolio contains a number of groups of stocks called “baskets.” I use baskets when I want exposure to a certain sector, but I want to use more than one stock to get that exposure without giving each individual stock an allocation.

In this portfolio, there is the Financials Basket which includes stocks that provide the portfolio with exposure to the financial sector which includes money-center banks, credit card companies, and investment management firms.

Additionally, there are two speculative baskets in the portfolio: Old-Spec and New-Spec.

Companies in the Old-Spec basket are ones with long track records where I want to have some exposure in the portfolio but I’m not confident enough to give each a full allocation.

New-Spec companies are typically stocks either new on the scene or representing a fairly new approach or sector, where, like Old-Spec, I want exposure but I don’t want a full allocation of any individual company.

This Week’s Moves

Boeing (BA): Added to Position

Boeing (BA) got hit particularly hard during Friday’s selloff, triggering my next buy order which filled at $117.90. The buy replaces some of the shares I sold throughout 2018-2019 at an average price of $369.67, locking in a -68.11% on the shares’ replacements.

The buy raised my per-share “cost” +$12.10 from -$160.45 to -$148.35 (a negative per-share cost indicates all capital has been taken out of the position in addition to $148.35 of profit per-share which is added to the portfolio’s bottom line).

From here, my next buy target is $101.30, above a key point of support during the pandemic selloff, and my next sell target is $233.45 where Boeing will have exceeded the target position allocation size for the portfolio.

BA is $120.70 as of Friday’s close, up +2.37% from where I added earlier Friday.

Morgan Stanley (MS): Dividend Reinvestment

One of the best parts of the financials are their often-substantial dividends. Morgan Stanley (MS) paid out its quarterly dividend Monday night which lowered my per-share cost -0.59% from $81.95 to $81.47.

As always, I opt to have my dividends automatically reinvested which means my broker gives me shares instead of cash. By doing this, the interest actually compounds because in addition to the payout, I now earn additional dividends on those newly-gotten gains.

While a reduction of less than a percent isn’t anything exotic, it’s definitely nice to get something for (relatively) nothing in the middle of a bear market.
